Subject: Show's da kine
The Jersey City show was moved from 2Jul76 to 4Aug76 after complaints from local (finger quotes) leaders (it's the nation's centennial celebration ... and it must not be represented by musicians with long hair and loud music!). Jersey City was then redesigned as a stop for the jump to London. When the latter was cancelled, they needed another show to make going east worthwhile, and this city park date was added. It had been two years since a show in CT – which was also in Hartford [you definitely should hear 31Jul74]. But after this they played Hartford again the following spring [you definitely should hear 18May77]. A police-exacerbated riot after this show caused the end of concerts at this venue, though Hartford remained the most consistent spot for great shows. This evening has a big 1st set (14 songs), but it's the second set that makes this a Hidden Gem. One reason for the "hidden" status is the lack of a SBD. I don't think Lemieux has said that it's missing from the vault, so it's a bit surprising that it's an AUDs-only show (and that this has yet to be OFF released). A SBD would be manna.
First Set. It takes a few to warm up, so patience rewards. The tempo drops after the first solo in Mississippi Half-Step, but sparks arrive as they break into Deal. Cassidy has fine intricacy from Billy & Mickey, and though Bobby comes in too soon it's still good. Tennessee Jed isn't sloppy so much as it lacks energy as the tempo slows again. Big River has become the bar boogie version, already sounding different than the year before (albeit here sounding a bit punchless). After a perfunctory Brown Eyed Women the set takes off (save a dirgy Loser). Jer is in an understated but original mood on these, and that shows on the made-of-win Minglewood. The tempo continues to improve on They Love Each Other, though it's Keith that owns this one. The Lazy Lightnin'>Supplication summation sends 'em silly to the set cessation.
Second Set. Might as Well is a good version as it is, but then it blows right into a unique jam in G (that then touches on Smokestack Lightning from Bobby). The gustatory Samson & Delilah has a rather funky windup. Candyman is another Jer song turned into a dirge and is again underplayed, but Jer sells it on pathos and Donna is good. Once again in this show, Jer changes things up with the intro to Playing in the Band. The chatter/clapping gets bad, but the drumming is great and it enters a unique jam after 11mins, and still another after 13:15. There are shades of '74 here as it goes out and stays there. Though the tempo in Wharf Rat falls off during the verses, Jer seems really excited to play this for some reason, and it breaks down into another unique jam. It has shades of Feelin' Groovy at one point, Phil is Philonius Funk as the jam evolves, and Jer grabs slide for a minute, before spending half a minute pushing into GDtRFB. A must-hear-once, and an 18min Wharf, btw. Goin' Down the Road is boisterous, and right as the Goodnight Jam starts it veers instead into another unique jam that (after 15½min of GDtRFB) reprises Playing (and that has a cool Keith section). There isn't a lot to this Around & Around, with it's Bobby flubs and Donnaskreech™, but then there's a double encore. There's a certain energy-bounce that emerges in U.S. Blues, and Jer is not satisfied until he takes another measure. Sugar Mag is a solid-enough show cap.
1st Set: B-
2nd Set: A-
Overall = 4¼ stars HG
Highlights:
New Minglewood Blues – understated but original
Lazy Lightnin'>Supplication – Bobby takes it to the house
Might as Well – unique in G
Samson & Delilah – funky windup
Playing in the Band – shades of '74 and evolves
Goin' Down the Road Feeling Bad – another unique + Keith
U.S. Blues – grows, blooms
SOURCES: The 132697_aud_gatto is now direct from the master tapes; the best overall. However, it does swim a bit, has some BAL issues (add some EQ for lows/highs), and has some blips in Deal (3:15>3:25), a dropout in PitB, and cuts in Wharf and the jam after GDtRFB. Some of the other sources run slow, contributing to the show's Hidden Gem nature, but with the right pitch and EQ the show will reveal. The 152092_aud_petrunis has no stereo image and not much clarity, but does have bass and is best for patches. The warburton_lee_smith sources have the most tunings, but sound distant. The aj_245 has thumpy lows (the Keith Gatto sources have some overbearing AUD chatter but the most presence). The Singer sources have BAL, image and pitch issues.

Subject: 3.5 * for '76 wood
Subject: 3.5 * for '76 wood
This seems like the best source. '76 has a real "wooden sound", and this source captures that better than the rest IMO. The McCabe source sounds slow
...
to me but does have more range especially in the high end. The other Gatto has some saturation in the levels. ALL the sources currently available were taped from the same location. You can hear the same conversations in the crowd on all of them. This one leans to the L. and the others to the R. If crowd bothers you, you may not like any of them. Some talkers for sure, but I'm not there, so it doesn't piss me off like it did. Not sure who the FUCK could POSSIBLY talk during Lazy Lightnin', and if it was you, you are a dipshit.
